when the growing spot...grows.

Some people can look at a spot in the yard and visualize what its going to look like when it gets ripped up into a garden.

I am not that person.

Farm Man Extraodinaire recently asked where exactly I wanted the garden and how big I intended it to be.

Well, let's see. Our garden at the old farmish place was 12x24...

...But I want it bigger than that, I said. After all, the relatives have already told us that when the crud hits the fan, they're coming to our place. And I got a pressure canner for my birthday. So let's make this garden bigger!

I set out some sawhorses so Farm Man Extraordinaire knew where I wanted him to start scraping with the skidloader.

I'm pretty sure I saw him smirk. Or maybe it was a roll of the eyes. Whatever. I went off to do other farm stuff while he played worked with the skidloader. When all was said and done...

Um...

Some people can look at a spot in the yard and visualize what its going to look like when it gets ripped up into a garden.

Some people would know what going from a 12x24 garden spot to a 36x80 garden spot would look like.

Did I mention I am not that person?

Looks like I'm gonna be busy. :)

  1. Nuthin' I love better than a nice, big gardening space! I'm betting next year you'll be having Farm Man Extraordinaire either enlarge it or add another garden spot. You must factor in those two growing boys you'll be feeding, after all!

    1. To feed these particular farmboys I'm thinking I should just get rid of every speck of grass we call our own. :)

  2. Oooh, a nice new garden bed! The possibilities are endless! We may ALL be heading your way when the crud hits the fan! We will need to see progress reports...

    1. Of course the progress reports will be posted. I do have that fancy camera. And since I live in MN, as soon as something turns green and sprouts, that is cause to celebrate!

  3. SM and I decided we really can't have a farm cause THAT would mean somebody gets to play with the tractor, gator, skid-loader, bobcat. You name it, we'd be fighting over it and then nothing would get done.

Nice job with the skid loader but I agree with Mama Pea. You'll be enlarging again soon. Specially since all of us are heading your way when the crud hits. @;)

  4. I'm interested in you positioning of the garden right next to the building on the left of your picture. Where I live we need as much light as possible as the growing season is only 3 months really. Is the garden facing south so it gets a lot of light in the summer? We do have a tremendous amount of wind so have considered putting up wind breaks next to the garden. Planting next to a building would help us with that as well.

    1. Hi Doug - yes the garden faces the south. We are in MN and have a short growing season as well. Amazingly enough, with the positioning of the sun in the sky and the way the Quonset is set, this patch of garden gets full sun all day long! The building does not shade the garden at all. :)

  5. Looks great! You inspired us to till ours the other day and now we already have weeds growing. Hope that is an indicator on how well the garden is going to do this year.

    1. I am very thankful for my patient husband. :) It's funny because now the kids know I'm visual too so very often the oldest will be explaining something he wants to do or make...and then leave to go get props...and come back saying, "Mom, let's start over. I know you're a visual person, so..." :)
